That's a Whole Lotta Cell Phones

-The average U.S. consumer only uses their current cell phone for 12 to 18 months.

-The average American cell phone user owns three (3) or more expired cell phones.

-In a recent survey, only 2.3% of Americans recycled their old cell phones.

-Number of Americans that don't know that they can recycle their cell phones=over 70%.

What does this mean for Bloomer Elementary?
How many of your friends and family have those three or more expired cell phones sitting at their house? Set a goal this week to ask two friends or family if they have any cell phones that can be recycled and raise money for our school. Does your work provide cell phones to its employees? Can you ask what the company does with the phones when they're replaced?

This fall isn't about asking friends and family to buy products to help our school, it's about recycling what we already have into funds we need to continue P.I.E.'s programs. All we have to do is ask.

What did you do with your old cell phone?

What does this company do with its old cell phones?

Do you know someone that has an old cell phone that might want it to be recycled and raise funds for our school?

Please email us with any questions at pie@bloomer.k12.wi.us. Thank you for supporting P.I.E.

Chocolate-Covered Questions

Remember to have your child bring in their Recycling Scavenger Hunt bag with their name on it by this Friday to be entered into a drawing for a Dairy Queen gift certificate!

Here are some common questions parents have been asking about the recycling program.

My child already brought in their bag, but we forgot to put their name on it. Does this mean they can’t be entered into the drawing?

They can still be entered into the drawing if you write a note listing the item they brought in and their name and teacher’s name. Put it in the green recycling bin and we’ll enter them into the drawing.

We lost the scavenger hunt bag that was sent home. Can we still send in an item on the list and be entered into the drawing?

Absolutely :) Send your item in any bag you can find and make sure your child’s name and teacher’s name is on the bag. A scavenger hunt list is to the right to remind you what we’re collecting to raise funds for P.I.E.’s programs. Remember, more recycling money raised=less fundraising needed.

We don’t have any of the items on the list. Are there other items we can bring in that aren’t on the list?

Unfortunately the only items we can recycle and raise funds for P.I.E. are on the list. Share your list with family, neighbors, co-workers & friends. Ask your employer what they do with their old inkjet or laster cartridges or old cell phones when they get new ones.

We’d like to donate an old laptop, but we’re worried about all of the personal information that may still be on the hard drive.

You can remove the whole hard drive from your laptop, please leave in the hard drive “holder” it plugs into. We’ll still receive the same amount of money if the hard drive is removed. (I can remove it for you. If you’re unsure how to do it, leave a note on it.)

Thanks for all the great questions!

Committees That Need Volunteers

Whether you've got a little time every week, every month, or only once a year, we need your help. We are in need of volunteers for the following committees for the 2009-2010 school year:

Vision/Hearing Testing

Help administer vision/hearing tests to students. Thorough training provided, so no prior experience is needed. We need five parents for each day and you do not need to be able to be there the entire time. Even if you can only be there for part of the time, please volunteer and we'll split up shifts.
Dates to Volunteer
Hearing Tests-October 15th and 16th from Noon to 2:30 p.m.
Vision Screenings-October 16th 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Santa’s Secret Shop (Chair: Missy Kostner)

Help put together a secret gift shop. Students will be able to buy inexpensive gifts for their parents & loved ones.
Dates to Volunteer
Set-up will take place on December 1st
and Santa's Secret shop will be open December 2nd & 3rd.

Sunshine Committee (Chair: Jennifer Schultz)

People on this committee would work together to show appreciation for our school staff. Help with monthly surprises for teachers and staff. Pass out birthday cards weekly. Help with organizing volunteers for the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on May 4th.

Mini Hawk Book Fair (Co-chairs: Kari Trulson and Robin Forss)

This committee will be coordinating the Book Fairs that are held 3 times throughout the school year. Volunteers will be needed to assist with setting up before and cleaning up after the book fair. Volunteers will also be needed to man the fair during the day or evening.

Mini-Hawk Reading Club (Chair: Heidi Schneider)

This is the independent monthly reading program for the children. The calendars that parents sign throughout the month have to be counted and certificates filled out. Other jobs may include copying &
distributing calendars or passing out certificates.

This committee meets monthly on the second Wednesday of the month from 8am to 11am. You can volunteer for whatever amount of time you're available that morning.
Dates to Volunteer
First meeting, November 11, 2009. December 9, 2009. January 13, 2010. February 10, 2010. March 10, 2010. April 14, 2009. May 12, 2010.
